About the museum
The Tuttlingen railway depot was built between 1928 and 1933 on behalf of the Deutsche Reichsbahn. The centerpiece is the seven-stall round engine house (Ringlokschuppen), a structure of wood and masonry with a self-supporting wooden roof in the New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit) style. Steam locomotives were parked here, supplied with coal and water, and maintained. The facility was inaugurated in 1933, and in 1975 the railway shut it down.
Since 1994, the complex has served as a privately run museum. On the four-hectare site on the Danube, the round engine house has been preserved, along with the three-story administration building with its large water tanks on the upper floor, the fully functional 21-meter turntable, and the coaling facilities. On display are 26 steam locomotives, several diesel locomotives, and passenger, sleeping, and freight cars from the steam era.
Maintenance and restoration of the grounds and vehicles are carried out largely with private funds, donations, and volunteer help. For more than thirty years of commitment, Ingrid Girrbach received the Deutscher Preis für Denkmalschutz (German Prize for Monument Protection) in 2025. The model railway collection, which gives the museum the second part of its name, is currently in storage and cannot be visited.
