About the museum
The museum opened in March 1997 on the upper floor of the former castle, which now serves as the Möhringen town hall. The building was constructed in the 14th century as the seat of the Obervögte (chief bailiffs), first mentioned as a castle in 1511, and later converted into a hunting lodge by the Fürstenbergs.
The exhibition traces the history of the old Baden town, which received town rights in 1307 and was incorporated into Tuttlingen in 1973. It covers the period from the Alemannic settlement to the 20th century and deals with, among other things, emigration, the Möhringen Fasnet with the Schemengericht (a carnival tradition) recorded since 1549, and well-known local personalities. Also on display are works by the Zoll family of painters from the 18th and 19th centuries, and a replica of the calculating machine invented by Anton Braun, which can perform all four basic arithmetic operations.
On the third floor is the collection of historical stringed instruments by Sepp Gulde, with zithers and other plucked instruments.
