About the museum

The museum is based on the collection of Karin Michelberger and Wilfried Schrem, who spent over forty years collecting, restoring, and documenting cast-iron stoves. The exhibition was first housed in Neu-Ulm (Bavaria), with little space and several short-term interim stops. The museum has now found a permanent home at the Fürst-Stolberg-Hütte in Ilsenburg am Harz.

The ironworks has a long tradition: Count Botho zu Stolberg laid its foundation stone in 1530. With art castings and artfully designed stove and fireplace plates, it became famous far and wide. Today the large works hall shows the stove collection alongside an iron museum.

On display are around 300 restored and dated stoves from more than 60 mostly German ironworks and manufacturers. The collection spans from stoves of the 17th century through ring-bead stoves and elaborate coal stoves to the electrified six-plate stove of the mid-20th century; art-cast stoves and curiosities are also included. The origin of over 90 percent of the pieces is documented, and missing parts were reconstructed in precise detail.
