About the museum
The museum sits in the Marienhof, the former manor (Herrenhof) of the count's outlying farm (Vorwerk) and later the domain. This was the traditional residence of the hereditary count of Stolberg and his relatives. Around 1840, to designs by Johann Heinrich Heinzmann, the house received an inner staircase of cast-iron art and a cast-iron balcony in the inner courtyard.
The roughly 300-year-old half-timbered building was thoroughly restored in keeping with its historic character from 2020 to 2026; among other things, damage caused by Echter Hausschwamm (dry rot) and an original door lintel from 1732 came to light.
The newly designed exhibition tells the story of the development of the Ilsenburg ironworks industry, above all cast-iron art, from the early stove plates of the 16th century to works of the 19th and 20th centuries. Paintings and drawings by Ilsenburg artists document the industry; another section is devoted to the Fürst-Stolberg-Hütte (Fürst Stolberg ironworks).
