About the museum

The museum's roots go back to 1967, when the Schmalspur- und Kleinbahn-Betriebsgesellschaft in Holm-Seppensen built up one of the first field railway collections in Germany and operated a short line there. Because the site could not be expanded, operations ended in the mid-1970s.

In 1977 the collection moved to Deinste near Stade and received its present name. Track construction began that same year; in 1978 the first section from Kleinbahnhof Deinste to Hagel was ready for service, and an extension to Lütjenkamp followed later. There, a former milking shed serves as an exhibition space with tools, models, and documents.

In 2012 a vehicle hall was added at the Kleinbahnhof, and in 2017 the line was extended by about 800 meters to Rehncampe, so that about two kilometers of track are now available. The rolling stock includes a Henschel steam locomotive from 1927, numerous diesel locomotives from various manufacturers, and passenger and freight cars, including army field railway cars from 1919.

The museum is run by a non-profit association whose members maintain the vehicles and track on a volunteer basis; a youth group also takes part regularly.
