About the museum
The Deutsches Ordensmuseum in Neuffen opened in 1982 for the city's 750th anniversary. It is a private institution; the pieces shown belong to its head, Heinrich Seewöster, who has run the museum from the beginning. A friends' and sponsors' circle supports the work and celebrated the museum's 40th anniversary.
The permanent exhibition traces around 170 years of German order history. One room is devoted to the Iron Cross from 1813 to 1945 and to awards from, among others, Oldenburg, Württemberg, Mecklenburg, Prussia, Hanover, and Saxony. Another room displays groups of orders and certificates from World War I, such as those of a Prussian fighter pilot, as well as Goethe medals for art and science and foreign orders.
The museum also shows the orders of merit of the Federal Republic, from the Verdienstkreuz am Bande (Order of Merit ribbon) to the Grand Cross, with the associated certificates. It also displays the current orders and decorations of the sixteen federal states, which were provided as permanent loans by the state and senate chancelleries. Visitors can also use an extensive library.
