About the museum
The Obstbaumuseum is located in the Glems Kelter, whose oak beams were felled in 1516. At that time the press house belonged to the church, which had owned vineyards in Glems for more than fifty years; the harvest had to be pressed on site. In the 18th century viticulture grew strongly; by 1722 almost 15 hectares of vines were recorded, and the press house was expanded for this purpose. Afterwards viticulture declined, and fruit trees gained the upper hand at this elevation. In 1893 a cider mill building was added, and cider finally became the region's main drink.
The cider press was renewed three times in the 20th century (1936, 1956 and 1979). In 1960 a savings and loan bank took over the building and used the press hall as agricultural storage. From 2003 the Raiffeisen cooperative leased the Kelter to the town of Metzingen on a hereditary lease basis. Together with the friends' association, which contributed a great deal of voluntary work, the museum came into being and opened in October 2004. The state monument authority (Landesdenkmalamt) and the funding programs Plenum and Regionen Aktiv supported the project.
Today the exhibition shows the steps from planting the fruit trees to processing the fruit. Cider making, schnapps distilling, preserving in jars, drying and jam making are presented as museum displays. The cider mill in the Kelter still operates today; the friends' association also maintains the Birnen-Erlebnisweg (pear adventure trail) through the surrounding meadow orchards.
