Weinbaumuseum Metzingen

Museum on Metzingen's winegrowing tradition in the historic Herrschaftskelter of the Seven Presses – with 27 stations to look at and try out.

Opening hours

About the museum

The idea of a winegrowing museum was brought up in 1970 by Metzingen's mayor Eduard Kahl. After a first provisional show in 1977, the Förderkreis Metzinger Keltern e.V. (friends' association) was founded in 1978 and took over management the following year. The museum was officially opened on October 21, 1979.

The museum's home is the Herrschaftskelter (lord's wine press house), one of the buildings of the listed ensemble of the Seven Presses (Sieben Keltern) at Metzingen's Kelternplatz. The wine press houses are documented since the late 13th century and once sheltered the large press beams used to press the grapes; in 1929 the ensemble was entered in the register of monuments.

In 1998 a cooper's workshop was added, and by the 25th anniversary in 2004 the museum had counted about 225,000 guests. In 2009, association members fundamentally redesigned the museum through volunteer work: the roof was insulated and heating installed, so that the building has been able to open year-round ever since. The redesign was opened at the end of November 2009.

Today 27 exhibition areas and hands-on stations tell of vineyard work, the cooper's craft and wine press operation – the showpiece is a mighty press beam from the 17th century. Since 2024 there has been a digital museum guide for smartphones. Behind the museum, the Förderkreis has run the Wengerterhäusle as a wine tasting room since 2000.
