About the museum
From 1892 to 1926, a horse-drawn streetcar connected the Döbeln main station with the city center. The Döbelner Straßenbahn AG was founded in 1891 by five businesspeople. On July 10, 1892, the meter-gauge line first ran to the Obermarkt, and in September the line was extended to Weißes Kreuz. On December 20, 1926, operations ceased, and motor buses took over the route.
In 2001, the idea of reviving the horse tram as a tourist attraction arose in the inner-city marketing working group. On January 11, 2002, the Traditionsverein Döbelner Pferdebahn (Döbeln horse tram heritage association) was founded. On June 9, 2007, the museum horse tram began operating between the theater and the Obermarkt.
The German Horse Tram Museum opened on June 13, 2009, in a building that the city had transferred to the association. Pictures, models, and a horse tram model tell the story of horse-drawn railways and horse-drawn streetcars. Since the track connection was completed in December 2009, the horse tram has departed directly from the museum's car barn.
