About the museum
The company DEUTZ is regarded as the world's first engine factory and was founded in 1864. Nicolaus August Otto developed the atmospheric gas engine in 1867, the first combustion engine built in series production, and in 1876 he produced the first working four-stroke engine. From Köln-Deutz the motorization of the world began.
The company's engine collection goes back to 1875. As early as 1925 it was made accessible to the public in a works museum. Today the Technikum shows more than 50 historic engines on around 600 square meters, documenting the development of combustion engine construction.
The exhibits include, besides the early gas and four-stroke engines, the first crosshead-less diesel engine of 1898, the well-known air-cooled engines, medium and large engines, and current drives. The museum is located on the company premises in Köln-Porz (Eil) and is not freely accessible; visitors can see it on free guided tours after prior registration.
