To mark its 25th anniversary, the exhibition takes a look behind the scenes of the museum: what a museum is, what it does and which professions it involves, with puppet scenes and interactive stations from the Augsburger Puppenkiste.
About the museum
The Augsburger Puppenkiste has performed in the former Heilig-Geist-Spital in Augsburg's old town since 1948. On 6 October 2001, the puppet theatre museum “Die Kiste” opened in the same building, run by the association Freunde des Augsburger Puppenspiels. Since then, the theatre, museum, museum shop and café-restaurant have formed a single house.
Over roughly 650 square metres, the museum displays numerous original marionettes from the theatre's television and stage productions, including Jim Knopf and Lukas, Urmel, Kater Mikesch, Kalle Wirsch and the Cat with the Hat. The figures are complemented by stage sets, designs and costume drawings; two small cinemas show television productions from several decades all year round.
Since opening, the house has presented more than 40 special exhibitions and welcomed around 1.4 million visitors. In 2026 it celebrates its 25th anniversary. Alongside the exhibitions, the programme includes workshops, puppetry courses, guided tours for children and families, and children's birthday parties. A café-restaurant and a fan shop in the same building round off the visit.
