About the museum

After the German population was expelled from Reichenberg, today's Liberec in northern Bohemia, in 1945, the City of Augsburg became the official sponsor of the expellees from the town and district in 1955. That same year, the Heimatkreis Reichenberg (Reichenberg expellee association) was given rooms on Maximilianstraße, where volunteers set up a heritage museum; an archive was added in 1959. Josef Preußler, the last German city archivist of Reichenberg and father of children's author Otfried Preußler, bequeathed his local history papers to it.

In 1971 the Heimatstube moved to Konrad-Adenauer-Allee 55, and later to number 39. There the association Heimatkreis Reichenberg Stadt und Land maintains an office with a library, archive, and exhibition rooms, which it calls the “smallest museum in Augsburg.” The contacts with Reichenberg cultivated over decades helped lead to the official town twinning between Augsburg and Liberec in 2001.

In three rooms, traditional costumes, precious bonnets – some from the 18th century – linens, baptismal certificates, paintings and prints, loom models, and cloth makers' tools show how people in Reichenberg and the surrounding area lived and worked before the expulsion. There is also a picture archive with thousands of photographs from northern Bohemia and the Jizera Mountains (Isergebirge), as well as a library of more than 1,500 local history volumes.
