About the museum
The building on Rathausgasse is one of the oldest surviving houses in Essingen and is documented around 1700 as the inn “Zum grünen Baum”. In 1823 the municipality bought the property and converted it into a town hall; at times it also housed a girls' school and a lock-up cell. Around 1900, the village's first post office and the office of a village constable and field warden were added.
When the administration moved into a new building in 1989, the old town hall served for a long time only as a storeroom and club room, and its future was much debated. From 2004, a group of citizens campaigned to show the village's history there. In 2008 the Essingen Village Museum Association was founded, and the municipality made the building available to it; the members gradually furnished the exhibition rooms, often drawing on holdings of the old municipal archive. The “Stüble” was also created on the ground floor as a meeting place.
Today the museum presents numerous themed rooms on several floors, including a file-cutting workshop and smithy, a fully equipped barber shop, an old classroom, the lock-up cell, an old kitchen, stove plates from the ironworks of the region, as well as rooms on beekeeping, dairy farming, gardening, tailoring, toys and skiing. A special feature is the “Archaeologica” section with finds from the Stone Age to the Roman and Alamannic periods from the Essingen area, some of them on loan from the Archaeological State Museum. The programme is complemented by special activities on the open Sundays.
