Heimatmuseum im Schillerhaus
Local history museum of the Heimatverein Oberkochen in the former schoolhouse: geology, prehistory and early history, crafts, and industry at the source of the Kocher.
About the museum
The Schillerhaus on Aalener Straße was built in 1860 as a Protestant schoolhouse with a teacher's apartment and served this purpose until the 1930s. Later it was a branch of the Aalen Schubart-Gymnasium, the local library, a youth center, and a meeting place. The building only received its name in the 1990s – a choice that was controversial in Oberkochen because Schiller had no connection to the town.
In 1997 the Heimatverein Oberkochen e.V. opened its local history museum on the upper floor and in the attic; since 2016 the whole building has been used as a museum.
The exhibition leads from the geology and paleontology of the Eastern Alb via finds from caves in the area and an Alemannic-Merovingian burial ground to local history. A focus is on the traditional trades such as pottery and drill-making as well as the transformation into an industrial center, which after 1945 is closely tied to the settlement of Carl Zeiss. In the attic, agricultural tools, household items, and a 1950s shoemaker's workshop can be seen.
