Dorfmuseum Gahlenz
Agricultural museum in a listed three-sided farmstead in Gahlenz near Oederan – rural life and work from 1850 to 1950.
About the museum
The impetus was the 800th anniversary celebration of Gahlenz in 1982: a local history working group displayed household and farm tools at the time, and the great response led to a plan for a permanent exhibition. In 1985, an interest group of the agricultural cooperatives of the Flöha district financed the purchase of a traditional three-sided farmstead and the start of its renovation.
After German reunification, the municipality of Gahlenz took over the farm and had it largely converted; at the end of 1991 the local history society was founded, which still helps support the museum today. The village museum opened in July 1992. Since the incorporation into Oederan in 2007, it has been an institution of the town of Oederan and is recognized by the Kulturraum Erzgebirge-Mittelsachsen as an agricultural museum.
The farm has been documented since 1653 and is a listed monument. In the half-timbered combined house and stable, a farm kitchen, a "Gute Stube" (best parlor), and a woodcarver's and lace-making room have been furnished; the attics show themed exhibitions on grain, flax, milk, fodder crops, and potatoes. In the barn and side building stand threshing machines, field wagons, and harnesses. A working horse gin, herb garden, bee house, and a bake house with a clay oven complete the site. At events such as "Winter Work on the Farm" and the harvest festival, the local history society demonstrates old working techniques.
