About the museum

The roots of the museum go back to 1909: that same year, an exhibition of antiquities with municipal memorabilia gave rise to a local history museum, which was initially run by the citizens' association and taken over by the town of Oederan in 1926. It was housed for a time in the town hall and moved to the Altmarkt at the end of the 1950s, where it was merged with a museum of labor history.

Around 2000 the old building no longer met requirements, and the town decided on a new building directly next to the town hall, which was also to house the tourist information office, the town archive and the demonstration workshop "Historische Handweberei" (Historic Hand Weaving). The newly oriented museum opened in January 2004 as web MUSEUM OEDERAN and has since been devoted mainly to the textile history of the Ore Mountains; today it operates under the name DIE WEBEREI | Museum Oederan.

On about 1,000 m², the exhibition ranges from the cloth makers and weavers' guilds of the Middle Ages to the industrial weaving of the 20th century. The centerpiece is working hand looms of various designs as well as a weaving hall with mechanical looms from the training workshop of the Wäscheunion Oederan. In addition there are a printing workshop, a still-usable cold mangle, a pewter collection and the history of the town and its districts at media stations. Courses, the weavers' forum and museum education projects keep the craft alive.
