About the museum
The village museum is housed in the former Völkl or Egerer house in Kleinwendern, a district of Bad Alexandersbad in the Fichtelgebirge. Around 1870, Johann Bartholomäus Egerer – stonemason, sculptor, tin mine owner and merchant – acquired the property from the Riedelbauch family.
The origin of the museum is closely tied to the acting couple Heinz Rippert and Heidi Rippert-Kuhlmann, who came to the Luisenburg open-air theatre in the early 1970s. In 1972 the two bought the house together with the barn and began collecting evidence of rural life. The village museum opened as early as 1974. After the couple's death, the property passed by inheritance to the municipality of Bad Alexandersbad; volunteers have since rearranged the exhibition.
On display are agricultural and household implements, household goods, painted farmhouse cupboards, chests and tables, ceramics, and tools of various trades, from the carpenter and the shoemaker to the blacksmith. They offer insight into farm life in the Fichtelgebirge in the 18th and 19th centuries. Among the rarities is a so-called Kleegeige (clover fiddle), with which farmers once sowed clover seed in the field. Kleinwendern itself was the first village in Bavaria to be designated an “Ark Village” because its residents keep old and endangered breeds of farm animals.
