About the museum
After the expulsion in 1945/46, Egerlanders began collecting mementos of their homeland as early as 1949; the first Egerland museums were established in Regensburg and Bayreuth. Because the market town of Redwitz belonged to the Eger imperial territory for centuries, the choice for a central cultural center later fell on Marktredwitz. The sponsor is the Egerland-Kulturhaus-Stiftung, in which the Bund der Eghalanda Gmoin and the town of Marktredwitz work together.
The building was expanded around the turn of the millennium. In 1999 the Egerland art gallery opened with about 300 square meters of exhibition space, inspired by the donor Richard Fleissner; on May 30, 2000, the redesigned permanent exhibition followed. The construction costs were around DM 8.6 million, and the usable floor space of the cultural center has since exceeded 3,000 square meters.
The bilingual exhibition (German and Czech) covers the culture and traditions of Egerland: costumes and painted furniture, piety, folk music, porcelain, glass, relief marquetry and the Sprudelstein of the spa towns. A staged Bäderstraße (spa promenade) takes visitors back to around 1900. The museum is complemented by a study library, a textile depot where visitors can view costumes and shawls under supervision, and the tradition of the Marktredwitz landscape nativity scenes. A museum app provides additional content on smartphones.
