About the museum
The museum commemorates the crafts that shaped Wendelstein until the 1960s. Knife makers (Messerer) were already based here in the 14th century; from their circle, blade smiths, scabbard makers, grinders, and turners developed. Turners are mentioned in occupational lists from about 1600 and gained their own importance in the 18th century; metal spinning came later. Most residents used to find work in these trades.
The Heimatverein Unteres Schwarzachtal (local heritage association of the Lower Schwarzach Valley) founded the museum in 2000 and runs it on a volunteer basis. Its aim is to show and preserve the products, tools, and machines of trades that are now almost extinct. It is housed in the old water house, built in the 1930s as Wendelstein's first municipal water house for the town's water supply, located in the Schwarzach valley not far from Schwabacher Straße.
