Zeidelmuseum Feucht
Beekeeping museum in the half-timbered Hutzlerhaus in Feucht on the history of the Zeidler, who kept bees in the Nuremberg Imperial Forest in the Middle Ages.
About the museum
For centuries Feucht was the center of Zeidlerei (medieval forest beekeeping) in the Nuremberg Imperial Forest. The Zeidler kept bees in hollowed-out trees, enjoyed far-reaching imperial privileges, and had their own court in Feucht, which existed until the late 18th century. To this day, the market town's coat of arms and logo recall this tradition.
To preserve it, citizens of Feucht founded an association for the preservation of Zeidlerei in 1976. The Markt Feucht (market town) had the Hutzlerhaus, a half-timbered building from the 17th century that once belonged to the neighboring Pfinzingschloss and is named after a former owner family, extensively restored, and has made it available as a museum building since 1986. The house received its magnificent half-timbered facade around 1700.
On three floors, the volunteer-run museum shows the development of beekeeping from the Middle Ages to today: primitive log hives, Zeidler knives, beekeepers' pipes, queen cages, honey extractors, and the costume of the Zeidler. Screens and Wi-Fi access provide in-depth texts, images, and films. Art exhibitions take place on the first floor. The association also runs a teaching apiary near the museum and beekeeping courses.
