About the museum

In 1909, the Geschichts- und Heimatverein Dreieichenhain (history and local heritage association) decided to establish the first museum in the Offenbach district. It opened on Easter Monday 1910 in a rear building on Fahrgasse and in 1911 moved into a former schoolroom of the Reformed school. After extensive excavations at the castle, the local history museum became a regional museum: in 1930 it was given the name Dreieich-Museum, and in 1931, after a redesign by the archaeologist Karl Nahrgang, it reopened.

Since 2011, the building has belonged to the Geschichts- und Heimatverein, after the Offenbach district handed it over. With a full-time museum director, the museum was renovated and reoriented: temporary exhibitions are held on the basement level, and a new permanent exhibition on the second floor opened in May 2017. In 2018, the Sparkassen-Kulturstiftung Hessen-Thüringen honored the house with its museum award.

The permanent exhibition "Dreieich mal fünf" ("Dreieich Times Five") tells the story of the five districts. It begins around the year 1000 with the Wildbann (royal hunting preserve) and the Turmburg (tower castle), displays archaeological finds and a listening station on Anna von Falkenstein, and continues through Offenthal, Götzenhain, and Sprendlingen to Buchschlag and the founding of the town in 1977 with the Hessentag (Hessian state festival). Interactive stations invite young and old visitors to try things out. The museum lies directly next to Hayn Castle, which has belonged to the association since 1931.
