About the museum

The museum's roots lie with the Heimat- und Geschichtsverein Dietzenbach (local history association), founded in 1963 to save evidence of the town's past from being lost during the community's rapid growth. For years the collection was stored provisionally in private rooms, until in 1975 the town provided a half-timbered house from 1765 on Darmstädter Straße. The Heimatmuseum (local history museum) opened there on September 25, 1976.

In the years that followed, the museum grew step by step: a complete village smithy was added in 1976, half of the neighboring administrative pavilion in 1977, a hall for large agricultural equipment in 1984, and in 1987 further rooms in which craftsmen's workshops were set up. For the Hessentag (Hesse Day festival) in 2001, a new building replaced the pavilion, which had become dilapidated.

Today the Historisches Museum consists of five interconnected buildings with nearly 900 square meters of exhibition space. The tour leads from Stone, Bronze and Iron Age finds through the Roman period and the Middle Ages to the 19th and 20th centuries. Furnished workshops of a shoemaker, saddler, wheelwright, glazier and carpenter, as well as agriculture, domestic life, toys and the two world wars are further themes; interactive stations and a museum cinema complement the presentation. The museum is run by the association together with the town of Dietzenbach, which provides the museum director.
