The exhibition shows the Dümmer lake from two different perspectives.
The Dümmer-Museum opened on 20 July 1968 in Lembruch. It was initially run by the local Heimat- und Verschönerungsverein, headed for three decades by Fritz Hollberg. After he stepped down, the management of the Kreismuseum Syke took over its care on an interim basis.
From 2001 the museum was closed and its content redesigned; it reopened in May 2003 with a modernised permanent exhibition. A support association was founded in 2004 and has backed its work ever since. In 2007 the Diepholz district took over as operator, and since then the museum has formed a joint municipal enterprise together with the Kreismuseum Syke.
In the following years the offering grew step by step: a clay oven and art objects in the outdoor grounds, in 2009 the research station "Leben im Wasser" (Life in the Water), a show pond with a viewing window, and in 2014 an extension for museum education and events. The thatched building shows how the lake came into being, its animal and plant life, and the Neolithic settlement of its shore, documented by finds from two excavation sites.
