Industriemuseum Lohne
Museum of Lohne's industrial history at the train station: quill pens, cork, brushes, tobacco, plastics, and a steam engine on three floors.
About the museum
The impetus came in 1986 from the Lohne local heritage association: it asked the town to set up a museum and contributed its collection, previously shown in the Old Town Hall, as well as start-up funding. In May 1988 the Industrie Museum opened in a former school on Gertrudenstraße, at first under municipal sponsorship. In only about 200 square meters, just one branch of industry could be shown at a time.
In 1996 the newly founded association Industrie Museum Lohne e. V. took over sponsorship, and a foundation has looked after the buildings since. In 2000 the museum moved into a new building opposite the train station on Küstermeyerstraße, financed by Lohne companies, the town, and the EU. In 2004 a large storage building on Südring was added, and in 2010 the museum became a station on the Route der Industriekultur im Nordwesten (Industrial Heritage Route in the Northwest).
An extension opened in 2021 brought a lecture hall, a room for changing exhibitions, a museum education room, and new rooms for the gallery of the painter Luzie Uptmoor. The permanent exhibition tells of around 200 years of regional industrial history on three floors – from the goose-quill pen through tobacco, cork, brushes, and bristle brushes to mechanical engineering, plastics, and peat. It is supplemented by bog archaeology and Roman coin finds from the region.
