About the museum
After the expulsion of the Sudeten Germans, about 70 people from the Bohemian town of Sandau (today Dolní Žandov) found a new home in Arzberg in July 1946. They joined together as the Heimatgruppe Sandau und Umgebung (Sandau and Surroundings Local Group) to keep alive the memory of their place of origin. In 1960/61 the town of Arzberg took on the patronage for Sandau and its former residents.
According to the operator, the Heimatstube has existed since 1965 and was housed in the old central school building from 1987; today it shows its collection in bright rooms of the Bürgerhaus. A first room is dedicated to remembering the old homeland, with coats of arms, photos from the founding meeting of the patronage, the patronage certificate and a pilgrimage cross.
Further display cases show the papier-mâché boxes for which Sandau is famous, as well as Egerland and Eger costumes. The collection also includes Egerland furniture, agricultural tools, craft objects, banners, photos and documents, the guitar of folk musician Anton Günther, and woodcuts and linocuts by the painter Rudolf Zuber. The centerpiece is an almost completely furnished Egerland parlor.
