About the museum

The synagogue in Georgensgmünd was built in 1734 and consecrated on March 4/5, 1735, by the margrave's state rabbi. It was the center of a Jewish community that existed in the village from 1564 to 1938. Inside, a wall painting on the south side was uncovered; in style and execution it is attributed to the itinerant Polish painter Elieser Sussmann.

Two ritual baths belong to the complex: an older cellar mikveh from the construction period and a later, heated mikveh on the ground floor. In the upper area, accessible through the attached teacher's house, Genizah finds are displayed – the storage place for writings and ritual objects that had become unusable. These include old religious books, prayer straps and small prayer shawls.

In front of the building, a memorial stone by the sculptor Reinhart Fuchs commemorates the Jewish victims of National Socialism in the district of Roth. A Torah curtain from 1861, which probably reached Munich in 1938 together with other ritual objects, returned to Georgensgmünd from Luxembourg after more than 80 years. Today a virtual 3D view of the main hall and a free audio guide complement the tour; the municipality looks after the house and offers guided tours.
