About the museum
The granary in Spalt was built in 1457 by the prince-bishops of Eichstätt as a grain store. Originally a three-story half-timbered building with a steep saddle roof, in 1790 sandstone walls replaced the half-timbering on the ground floor and on the gable sides. From 1862 the building belonged to the town, which used it as a hop store; from 1897 to 1984 it also served as a hop inspection hall.
Between 2009 and 2014 the listed building was carefully restored, including a glazed staircase tower, new floors and gentle cleaning of the historic surfaces. During the investigation, a life-size soldier's drawing from the Napoleonic era was also uncovered.
In 2015 the HopfenBierGut opened here as a museum on around 1,200 square meters. Interactive displays combine with original historic objects on the history of hops and beer in Spalt; in 2017 the house received the Bavarian Museum Prize.
