About the museum
The Eisenbahnmuseum Lokschuppen Aumühle has been run on a volunteer basis since 1971 by the Verein Verkehrsamateure und Museumsbahn (VVM). The association goes back to a light railway association registered in Hamburg in 1958, and besides Aumühle it also operates the Schönberger Strand museum railway and the Wohldorf light railway station. The museum site lies on the edge of Aumühle, right next to the S-Bahn storage sidings; the association later bought the grounds and, among other things, renovated the roof of the railway foreman's hut in 2004.
The collection is housed in a half-timbered engine shed from 1912, whose forest side is still original. The concept focuses on vehicles that were long and widely used in northern Germany, with an emphasis on local and regional passenger transport between about 1870 and the 1950s. Aumühle features mainly vehicles of the state and main railways that were important for the greater Hamburg area.
The exhibits include several steam and diesel locomotives, among them the Eutin–Lübeck locomotive 14 and a locomotive of the Prussian T3 class. Visitors can look at driver's cabs, ride a hand-lever draisine, experience short rides on the field railway and visit a photo exhibition in a former S-Bahn control car.
