About the museum
The Glinder Mühle by the mill pond is considered Glinde's oldest building and was first mentioned in a document in 1229. Over the centuries it worked as a fur mill for Hamburg white tanners, from 1679 as a copper mill, briefly as a dyewood mill and last as a grain mill. After a fire in 1849 it was rebuilt immediately; in the 20th century the milling operation ceased.
The building came under heritage protection in 1979; in 1981 the town of Glinde bought the mill and had it extensively renovated with public funds. On August 23, 1985, the museum opened there, initially called "Glinder Kupfermühle" (Glinde Copper Mill). It is run by the Heimat- und Bürgerverein Glinde (local heritage and citizens' association), founded in 1982.
Because the collection of agricultural equipment grew, the association built three wagon sheds and a working clay oven on the mill meadow between 1991 and 2012. Today the buildings show crafts, home and farm, agriculture and flour processing, plus a cobbler's workshop, an upholsterer's, a historic hair salon and a 1950s parlor.
