About the museum

The Baltringer Haufen (Baltringen band) was one of the three peasant bands in Upper Swabia, the Allgäu and Lake Constance that rose up in spring 1525 against the power of the nobility, monasteries and imperial cities. In March 1525 they joined together to form the Christian Union (Christliche Vereinigung); the Twelve Articles, drawn up in Memmingen, were distributed throughout Germany. In them, the peasants justified their demands with the word of God as revealed in the Bible. In April 1525 the troops of the Swabian League advanced, and the band surrendered.

In Baltringen, the association “Baltringer Haufen – Freunde der Heimatgeschichte” (Friends of Local History) has commemorated these events since 1997. The exhibition, initially set up in 1984 as the Bauernkriegsstube (Peasants' War room), was redesigned in 1999 and reopened in 2000 as the “Erinnerungsstätte Baltringer Haufen – Bauernkrieg in Oberschwaben”. The association has looked after it on a volunteer basis to this day.

Three rooms in the town hall document the events with numerous illustrations and a few exhibits. A short film leads chronologically through the events; for school classes there are materials and a historical role-play.
