About the museum

Baron Raymund Fugger had the villa built in 1912 on a hill above the Rot valley; the architect Balthasar von Hornstein-Grüningen combined Baroque, Neoclassical, and Art Nouveau forms and incorporated the old trees into the park. In 1925 Alexandra von Hornstein bought the so-called Fuggerschlösschen; after her death it passed to her friend Feodora Christ, who in 1933 married the cellist and conductor Hermann Hoenes. After Hoenes was forced out of the Reichs-Symphonie-Orchester during the Nazi era, the couple made the villa a quiet meeting place for music and art after 1945.

The Hoenes Foundation, established in 1987, grew out of the couple's estate – the house, the park, and a collection of mainly Asian and European sculptures, porcelain, and crafts. It opened the Museum Villa Rot on August 28, 1992, which under Norbert Deuchert initially showed exhibitions on cultures such as those of Japan, Africa, and India.

From 2007, Stefanie Dathe oriented the museum toward thematic group exhibitions of contemporary art; after renovation, it reopened in spring 2008. In 2014 the art hall designed by Hinrichsmeyer & Bertsch was added, made possible by an additional endowment from the sculptor Willi Siber, providing space for large-scale works. Today the museum presents three temporary exhibitions a year, has hosted a chamber concert series in the Hoenes-Saal since 2006, and since 2016 holds the art fair Roter Kunstsalon every fall.
