About the museum
The museum is named after Erkenbert, who founded an Augustinian canons’ monastery in Frankenthal in 1119. The Altertumsverein Frankenthal, founded in 1892, set up the Erkenbert Museum in 1893 in the monastery’s former granary; between 1910 and 1914 the collection moved to an upper floor of the monastery ruins. These rooms were destroyed in the air war of 1943.
In 1986 the Altertumsverein and the city agreed to run the museum jointly. The new location was the former Stadtsparkasse building on Rathausplatz, which opened as a museum in 1990 after renovation. Together with the city archive, the museum preserves the city’s historical heritage.
On three floors the permanent exhibition spans around 1,500 years of art and cultural history of the former fortress and garrison town, regarded as the third capital of the Electoral Palatinate. Among the most important pieces are Merovingian-period grave finds from around 500 AD, landscape paintings of the Frankenthal School of painters around 1600 – for example by Gillis van Coninxloo and Anton Mirou – and an extensive collection of Frankenthal porcelain from the second half of the 18th century.
The building is currently closed because of an upcoming general renovation; a selection of objects on the city’s history can be seen in the town hall.
