Barlach Kunstmuseum Wedel
Exhibition venue in Ernst Barlach's birthplace in Wedel with changing exhibitions from classical modernism to pop culture.
About the museum
Ernst Barlach was born in 1870 in the neoclassical corner house on Wedel's market square, built in 1835. The town of Wedel acquired the building in 1982 and had it extensively converted; in August 1987 it opened as a museum, run by the Ernst Barlach Gesellschaft Hamburg, which also runs the museum in Ratzeburg.
There is no permanent exhibition on Barlach here. Instead, the museum, now operating as the Barlach Kunstmuseum Wedel, shows two to three changing exhibitions a year – with artists of classical modernism and the present as well as themes from photography and pop culture.
The society owns an extensive Barlach collection of sculptures, drawings, woodcuts, lithographs, letters and manuscripts, from which it repeatedly presents works in changing thematic contexts.
