About the museum

The building on Küsterstraße was built in 1829 as a schoolhouse. In 1912, an antiquities museum with a folklore collection moved in, which was renamed Heimatmuseum (local history museum) in 1936 as part of Nazi cultural policy. After the end of the war, the museum was dissolved and the collection sold; the building first took in refugees and then served various institutions and associations.

From 1982, the Schleswig-Holsteinischer Heimatbund held exhibitions here and campaigned for a reopening. After the building was restored in 1989, the Heimatmuseum Wedel opened in 1992 with a new permanent exhibition on social history, complemented by special exhibitions, lectures, and museum education programs.

Since 2006 it has been called Stadtmuseum Wedel. In 2020, archaeological finds dating back to the Paleolithic were added. The museum includes a museum garden and a garden house with a lecture and conference room; the Möller-Technicon, which was temporarily affiliated, has been independent since 2025.
