About the museum
Gelenau in the Ore Mountains has been shaped by stocking knitting for generations. The First German Stocking Museum has existed since 1992 on Rathausplatz and preserves the technology and everyday culture of this craft.
On display are machines from the early days of stocking knitting as well as modern machines and a sample collection. Much of the technology is still functional and can be put into operation during demonstrations. A stocking knitters' room from the 19th century shows how meagerly the stocking knitter families lived.
For two years the house was redesigned behind closed doors: floors and walls were renewed, new rooms were created, and the exhibition was brought up to date with screens, buttons and headphones. Since July 3, 2020, the museum has once again welcomed visitors. During opening hours, visitors also receive tips about Gelenau and the surrounding area.
