About the museum
Erwin von Kreibig (1904–1961) was a typical Schwabing artist of the 1920s and early 1930s. As a draftsman and illustrator he worked, among others, for the magazines "Simplicissimus" and "Jugend", but he also created numerous paintings. In 1961 he was the first recipient of the Schwabing Art Prize for Painting.
The museum opened in 1991 and goes back to a foundation by his brother Erich, who contributed Erwin's assets and the works he had collected. It is located at the entrance to the Southern Schlossrondell, opposite Nymphenburg Palace. The foundation also includes the adjoining Hofkistlerhaus, one of the ten Rondell pavilions that Joseph Effner built in front of the main building of the palace in 1730.
In permanent and special exhibitions, the museum presents Kreibig's artistic estate. The Erwin-von-Kreibig-Stiftung also organizes exhibitions by other artists, including the Nymphenburg Art Exhibition held annually since 1995, and awards the Nymphenburg Art Prizes for painting (since 1995) and sculpture (since 1996). A museum café and a museum shop belong to the house.
