Museum Peter Gehring
Private museum with works by architect and sculptor Peter Gehring in a listed 1950s house with garden – by appointment only.
About the museum
The single-story house with gabled roof, wooden cladding, and large south-facing windows in western Munich was designed by architect Gustav Gsaenger in 1950/51 for landscape architect Alfred Reich, a student of Karl Foerster. Reich laid out a garden of around 3,200 square meters to go with it, featuring walls, terraces, a greenhouse, and a swimming pool. He lived here until his death in 1970.
In 1998 Peter Gehring and his wife Birgit Andrea Gehring acquired the property. Gehring had studied architecture at TU München and completed postgraduate studies in Glasgow, but also worked as a concert and opera singer and, alongside numerous buildings, created an extensive body of visual art. His sculptures, drawings, and collages mostly focus on the human figure, especially the female figure. He died in 2001 at the age of just 47.
The house and garden have been listed as a historic monument since 2010. With support from the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz, the GlücksSpirale lottery, the Free State of Bavaria, and the district of Upper Bavaria, the garden wall, greenhouse, and pool area, among other things, were restored. In June 2015 Birgit Andrea Gehring opened a private art and architecture museum with a sculpture garden here, showing her husband’s bronze sculptures, nude drawings, paper cuts, photo collages, and architectural projects.
