About the museum
The White Tower was built around 1400 on behalf of Trier Elector Werner von Falkenstein as a border, toll and defensive tower, roughly 100 meters before the border with the Electorate of Cologne. Gun loops show that firearms were already planned for during construction. Until 1829, through traffic on the "Alte Straße" ran right past the tower. Craftsmen and innkeepers settled around it, and the settlement later became the town of Weißenthurm. Locally the tower is also called the Eulenturm (Owl Tower); it has been a listed monument since 1983.
In the former living and defensive quarters, which at times also served as a prison, the Eulenthurm-Museum offers insights into local history. The tower is about 28.5 meters high.
Exhibits, information boards and pictures explain how Weißenthurm developed and how its residents earned their living. Two industries shaped the town in particular: the tinplate industry and the processing of pumice stone. The tour traces how these industries emerged and developed.
