About the museum
The museum bears the name of the humanist and physician Johann Winter, who was born in Andernach in 1505 and died in 1574. It opened in May 1992. It is run by the Heilkundemuseum e.V. association, founded in 1987 and registered since 1989, which has been recognized as non-profit since 1994.
The museum is housed in the former residence of the grammar school professor and classical scholar Johannes Schwab, who died in 1947. The foundation of the collection was private collections of instruments, pictures and books from the founding members; later, objects came from the public, from medical practices and hospitals, and new acquisitions were added. Because the space does not allow everything to be shown, some objects appear only in special exhibitions or in a display case for new arrivals.
The exhibition follows chronology and themes: from medicine in prehistory and among indigenous peoples, through antiquity and the Middle Ages, to the hospital and the modern hospital, as well as nursing, anatomy, dentistry, pharmacy, surgery, obstetrics, anesthesia, and diagnostics of the 19th and 20th centuries. A library and a herb garden complete the house.
