About the museum

The Vulkanpark Infozentrum at the Rauschermühle between Plaidt and Saffig opened in 2000 as the first of today's several information and experience centers of the Vulkanpark. It serves as the gateway to the Vulkanpark in the East Eifel and as the first point of contact for trip planning and basic information. It is operated by Vulkanpark GmbH, founded in 1996 by the district of Mayen-Koblenz and the Leibniz Centre for Archaeology.

The exhibition is divided into two sections. The volcanology section uses large light panels, film and original pieces, such as a basalt bomb, to show how magma rose in the East Eifel and shaped the landscape. The archaeological section traces the quarrying history of basalt and tuff stone, from Roman times through the Middle Ages to modern times, including a 3D floor picture that opens a view into tunnels and quarries.

Outside, the stone experience garden invites visitors to hear, feel and move volcanic rocks. Directly adjacent is the Rauscherpark, where the Nette river flows over large basalt blocks.
