About the museum
In the 16th century, Duke Johann Ernst of the Ernestine line of the Wettins moved his court from the Veste down into the town. On the site of a dissolved Franciscan monastery, a three-winged Renaissance complex was built, completed in 1547. According to tradition, Emperor Karl V gave it the name Ehrenburg because it had been built without compulsory labor (Frondienste).
After the Thirty Years' War and a fire, Duke Albrecht expanded the palace into a Baroque residence from 1690. Stucco ceilings by Upper Italian masters, the Hofkirche and the Riesensaal date from this period. After 1810, Duke Ernst I remodeled the complex fundamentally: following designs by the young Karl Friedrich Schinkel, it received its Neo-Gothic appearance. Between 1816 and 1840, the architect André-Marie Renié-Grétry furnished the living and reception rooms in the Classicist style of the French Empire, with furniture, clocks and candelabra, mostly from Paris.
Furniture from the Historicism period recalls guests such as Queen Victoria and the far-flung relatives of the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Today the Bayerische Schlösserverwaltung (Bavarian Palace Administration) looks after the palace. The tour leads through around 25 rooms, including the Familiensaal, Riesensaal, Thronsaal, picture galleries, the duchess's private apartments and the Hofkirche.
