Europäisches Spargelmuseum

Specialist museum in the old Amtsturm of the Schrobenhausen town wall, all about asparagus – cultivation, botany, table culture, art and curiosities.

Opening hoursAdmission €2

About the museum

The idea for a museum of its own devoted to asparagus came from a circle of Schrobenhausen asparagus enthusiasts: in 1983 an asparagus knife, a smoothing trowel and a harvest basket formed the foundation of the collection. The initiator was Klaus Englert, and the exhibition was assembled by the support association of the Schrobenhausen museums. On 13 May 1985 the town opened the museum as the Deutsches Spargelmuseum – in the middle of Bavaria’s best-known asparagus-growing region.

The museum is housed in the former prison and Amtsturm, part of the medieval town fortifications on the southwestern edge of the old town. After a comprehensive extension and redesign in 1991 it bears the name Europäisches Spargelmuseum. In 1993 the Council of Europe counted it among the ten best specialist museums in Europe, and in 2006 it was named a “Ort im Land der Ideen” (Selected Landmark in the Land of Ideas).

The ground floor is devoted to origin, botany and cultivation: herbals and copperplate engravings show the plant’s role in science and medicine, special tools show the laborious cultivation, and a short film complements the tour. The upper floor is about asparagus on the table – with cookbooks, recipes and a collection of asparagus dishes and cutlery. In the adjoining castle park, special ploughs and a small sample field can be seen. The tower also houses the town’s tourist information office; in 2025 the museum celebrated its 40th anniversary.
