About the museum
The Wittelsbacher Museum is located in the Unteres Tor (Lower Gate) of Aichach, a gate tower of the late medieval town wall built around 1418. From 1989 to 2019 it housed a branch of the Archäologische Staatssammlung (State Archaeological Collection); in 2019 the City of Aichach took over the building and has run it itself since then.
Across four floors, the exhibition "Archäologie im Aichacher Raum" (Archaeology in the Aichach area) traces the story from the Stone Age to the late Middle Ages, with numerous hands-on stations on archaeological methods. One focus is Burg Wittelsbach, the ancestral castle of the House of Wittelsbach: high-status finds and reconstructions tell of the castle's construction to its end and of daily life in a medieval castle. Another area is devoted to the Grubet, an early medieval ore-mining area near Aichach, with explanations of how iron ore formed and how metal was processed. On the top floor, four windows and four monitors show views of present-day and historic Aichach.
