About the museum
In the Middle Ages, Inchenhofen was a pilgrimage site of European importance. From 1283, Cistercian monks from Fürstenfeld Abbey looked after the pilgrimage to Saint Leonhard and brought it to great prosperity. The Leonhardiritt (St. Leonhard's ride) was introduced in 1457 by Abbot Paul Herzmann and is considered one of the oldest of its kind; the Rococo pilgrimage church received its ceiling frescoes from Ignaz Baldauf in 1757.
The museum is located on the upper floor of Haus St. Leonhard, the former brewery building of the Cistercians. From 1904 to 1971, a branch of the Dillingen Franciscan sisters lived there; after a thorough renovation by the parish church foundation, the public library and parish groups have used the house since 1992. The exhibition was created on behalf of the parish, in cooperation with the Landesstelle für die nichtstaatlichen Museen (state office for non-state museums).
The tour shows the veneration of St. Leonhard through text panels and exhibits: the saint's life story, illuminated large slides of the ceiling paintings, a room on Fürstenfeld Abbey with charters, miracle books and abbots, a map of the wide catchment area of the pilgrimage, and numerous votive offerings such as plowshares, horseshoes, shackles and wax offerings. In the props room, the vestments of the Leonhardiritt are kept, including an original papal robe.
