About the museum

At the beginning of the 20th century, Aichach local history enthusiasts began collecting folk-culture and local history objects from the region. Over decades this created the foundation of today's museum, which found a permanent home in 1969 after several moves and opened in 1972 as a local history museum.

The building on Schulstraße was once the municipal hospital: built in 1863/64, expanded in 1914 and in operation until 1967. After that the district used large parts of it for a special-needs school, while the city set up the local history museum in the older part. After the school moved out in 1999, the building was thoroughly renovated and has since provided space for the town museum, the town archive and a children's day care center.

After a complete redesign, the museum opened in 2008 under the name Stadtmuseum. The permanent exhibition on the upper floor and attic tells the history of Aichach and its surroundings on around 1,000 m² from the 12th century to the territorial reform of 1972 – closely tied to the House of Wittelsbach, whose ancestral castle lay near the town. Topics include sacred art, the town in the Middle Ages and the early modern period, rural and middle-class life, the Napoleonic Wars, as well as industry, trade and the Aichach women's prison in the 19th and 20th centuries. Special exhibitions take place on the first floor.
