Fabergé Museum
Private museum in Baden-Baden devoted to the work of Russian court jeweler Carl Peter Fabergé – with jeweled eggs, jewelry, and objects made of gemstones.
About the museum
The Fabergé Museum was opened in Baden-Baden on May 9, 2009, by Russian art collector Alexander Ivanov. It describes itself as the first museum devoted exclusively to the life's work of the St. Petersburg court jeweler Carl Peter Fabergé. It is based on a private collection that Ivanov assembled over several decades.
The museum is housed in a listed city building from 1900 on Sophienstraße, just a few steps from the pedestrian zone and the thermal baths. Ivanov had the building acquired, converted, and fitted with elaborate security technology at a cost running into the tens of millions.
According to the museum, the collection comprises more than 1,500 objects: jeweled eggs presented as imperial Easter eggs of the tsar's family, jewelry, cigarette cases, animal figures carved from semiprecious stones, and simpler everyday objects from the time of World War I. The museum also shows works by contemporaries such as Bolin, Boucheron, and Cartier, and, in a separate exhibition, gold objects from various cultures. The authenticity of some of the pieces described as imperial Easter eggs is disputed among experts.
