Europa im Pop-Fieber. Von Erró bis Sigmar Polke

The exhibition shows how European artists, in parallel with American Pop Art, took up images from advertising, fashion, and entertainment and questioned them critically.

About the museum

Collector and publisher Frieder Burda set up a foundation in 1998 to make his art collection permanently accessible to the public. A light-filled new building designed by New York architect Richard Meier was built on Lichtentaler Allee and opened in October 2004. A glass bridge connects it with the neighboring Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden; the building has received awards including a RIBA European Award.

The collection comprises about 1,000 works, with a focus on Picasso and classical modernism, German Expressionism, American Abstract Expressionism, and contemporary German art, including large groups of works by Gerhard Richter, Sigmar Polke, and Georg Baselitz. The museum shows them in changing presentations and complements them with major special exhibitions featuring international loans.

Founding director Klaus Gallwitz was succeeded by Götz Adriani and Helmut Friedel, and from 2017 Henning Schaper ran the museum. Since Frieder Burda's death in 2019, his stepdaughter Patricia Kamp has looked after the collection. In 2016 the Salon Berlin, an experimental project space in the former Jewish Girls' School, was added. Since 2024 Daniel Zamani (artistic) and Florian Trott (commercial) have shared the leadership; a light installation by James Turrell has been on permanent view in the museum since 2018.
