Stadtmuseum Baden-Baden

Town museum in the Alleehaus on the Lichtentaler Allee: 2,000 years of Baden-Baden from Roman spa to fashionable world-famous resort.

Opening hoursAdmission from €5

About the museum

The Stadtmuseum goes back to the Städtische historische Sammlungen (municipal historical collections) founded in 1892. Since 2004 it has been housed in the Alleehaus in the middle of the Lichtentaler Allee, which belongs to the Scherer Foundation and is made available to the city as a museum building.

On this spot there was once a manor of the Margraves of Baden, first mentioned in 1480; the house received its present form in the 19th century. A glass pavilion complements the building and houses stone monuments and sculptures from the Roman period to modern times.

On two floors, the permanent exhibition tells the history of the city from the Roman spa town through the residence of the margraves to the international world-famous resort of the 19th century, when the casino, promenades and horse races attracted guests from all over Europe. Turning points such as the destruction in the War of the Palatinate Succession, the Nazi era and the French occupation are also addressed. The holdings comprise over 50,000 objects, including paintings, graphic art, sculptures and decorative arts; the attic is reserved for special exhibitions. An online audio guide and a virtual tour complement the visit.
