Museum für Kunst und Technik des 19. Jahrhunderts
Museum LA8 on the Lichtentaler Allee in Baden-Baden: changing themed exhibitions on art and technology of the 19th century.
About the museum
The palais at Lichtentaler Allee 8 was built in 1820 by a Baden-Baden building contractor and remodeled in 1822 following sketches by Friedrich Weinbrenner. It served as the residence of the Swedish Queen Frederica, at one time belonged to the Frankfurt banker Amschel Mayer Rothschild, and was later used by the casino lessee Edouard Bénazet and by the Internationaler Club, which organizes the horse races in Iffezheim.
The GRENKE-Stiftung had the property renovated from 2007 to 2009 and extended by a new building modeled on historical precedent. In April 2009 the Museum für Kunst und Technik des 19. Jahrhunderts opened there as part of the cultural center LA8, which also includes event halls and a chess center.
The museum has no permanent display but shows, on about 400 square meters, themed exhibitions that change roughly every six months, with loans from Germany and abroad. They link art, cultural, and technological history – so far on topics such as photography, flight, bathing culture, the high seas, and life reform – and show how inventions and ideas of the 19th century still have an effect today.
