About the museum
The Cordonhaus stands along the inner town wall of Cham and dates back to the 16th century. It originally belonged to the Reichenbach monastery and was used in many different ways over time. In the late 18th century, a unit of mounted troops was stationed here; the name goes back to the French word for a chain of military posts securing the Bavarian border. The inner courtyard, with its arcades and covered walkway, is especially notable.
In the 1970s, the building was acutely threatened with decay. After its renovation, completed in 1981, it received a new use and has since housed, among other things, the municipal gallery.
For more than four decades, the gallery has been regarded as one of the most important art venues in eastern Bavaria. Its temporary exhibitions show contemporary art by regional artists as well as prominent positions from all over Germany, some curated especially for the house. The event hall on the first floor is also used for readings, lectures, theater, and workshops. Together with the Museum SPUR, the gallery belongs to the network "Zeitgenössische Kunst in der Oberpfalz" (Contemporary Art in the Upper Palatinate).
